UT Psychiatry is among the first in Memphis to offering Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Treatment to the mid-south and surrounding area. This FDA approved treatment of Major Depressive Disorder is a non-invasive, safe, and effective option for those who haven’t benefitted from anti-depressants.
HOW TMS WORKS
TMS treatment involves a magnetic field that sends electromagnetic pulses through an external coil that is directed at a specific brain region. This magnetic field is similar to that of an MRI. The coil will be positioned above the scalp directed at an area of the brain implicated in depression (most commonly the front left side of the head).
A course of treatment lasts 36 sessions with a typical appointment lasting about 45 minutes, 5 days a week for 6 weeks. Each session will involve questionnaires, treatment, and follow up.
Any patient that has had failed medication treatment plan for Depression is able to utilize this treatment option.
May not be eligible for TMS if: Patient has metal in the head (such as aneurysm clips, stents, cochlear implants, bullet fragments, etc.), epilepsy, brain damage from illness or injury, etc. Please consult your physician for more information about eligibility.
Potential Side Effects
Headaches, scalp irritation at or around the treatment site, seizures (very rare/ minimal); Side effects are monitored daily.
Results
TMS results in a reduction and/or resolution of depression symptoms (typically felt by the 4/5 week of treatment); TMS is not effective for all people and there is no guarantee that it will work for you.
